McCracken, Kansas was founded in 1887.
It was named for J.K. McCracken, who was a railroad conductor and one of the first trustees.
Within a month the town the town was assigned a post office.
During the first year, the town gained a bank, two grocery stores, a drug store, a newspaper, a theater and an evangelical United Brethren church. The people had already built St. Mary's Catholic Church in 1886. The town also built a jail in 1901 that now serves as a museum. They acquired a flour mill, grain elevator, several more churches, and a Telegraph office, all by 1910. The Catholic Church was rebuilt in 1926 and still stands today.
McCracken’s population peaked at 594 in 1930. The city started to decline after losing its train depot. Now around 175 residents call McCracken, Kansas, home.
